Overview of Art Philosophy

Students of Cherry Hill School will be introduced to the Elements of Art, line, value, texture, shape, form, space, and color as well as the Principles of Design, balance, rythym, movement, proportion, variety, emphasis, and unity through the exposure of both two and three dimensional art works. Students will experiment and investigate a wide variety of artistic techniques which include as follows: drawing, painting, print making, sculpture, ceramics, architecture, and computer design.

My instruction is focused on Disipline Based Art Educational approach, concentrating on the four disiplines of art: production, art history, art criticism and aesthetics. The objectives in these disiplines are appropriate for each grade level and correlated to state and national art standards. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of media and techniques in their studio production. Students will be able to create art, they will be encouraged to analyze, interpret and evaluate art. They will be expected to learn how to communicate their ideas and feelings while fostering respect for one another, through written and verbal critique and analysis.

Art lessons form a natural connection to other academic disiplines. I will be working alongside other classroom teachers throughout the course of the year. The other academic disiplines that art will foster are as follows: math, language arts, science, social studies, foreign language, and music. Projects usually require an average of two to four class periods to complete based upon the degree of difficulty involved.

The lessons that will be introduced to students will be designed to strengthen cognitive skills which may be carried on to their other content areas. These include the ability to remain on task, recall factual information, solve problems, draw conclusions, differentiate between opinion and objective observation, and think in visual images. I hope to pass along my love of art and to make learning not only fun, but beautiful!
